Apna Backup Mobile: Live Server Telemetry

1. Mission-Critical Context

During my internship and development at Avyukta Intellicall, enterprise telecom servers were executing automated terabyte-scale database and system backups every few hours. System administrators lacked mobile visibility; they had to stay tethered to terminal workstations to verify if jobs completed or stalled.

If an unexpected network drop or drive overflow happened overnight, hours passed before IT noticed. Apna Backup Mobile was engineered to give engineers instant, real-time push telemetry and visual health meters anywhere in the world.

2. Real-Time WebSocket Architecture

To achieve real-time telemetry with sub-second feedback, traditional REST polling was replaced by an asynchronous pub/sub model:

  • Python Telemetry Daemon: Lightweight Python script running as a systemd service, monitoring file transfer progress, I/O rates, and process return codes.
  • WebSocket Channel: Secure WSS connection streaming JSON heartbeat packets and transfer rates directly to connected clients.
  • Flutter Reactive Stream UI: StreamBuilder and Riverpod providers in Flutter rendering dynamic progress bars and instant push notifications on failed jobs.
  • Failover Handling: Automatic reconnect backoff algorithms ensuring immediate reconnection when devices transition between Wi-Fi and 5G.
